Why does chopping onion make us cry?
Chopping onions can make us cry because onions contain a chemical called syn-propanethial-S-oxide, which is released when the onion's cells are damaged, such as when they are cut or chopped.
When this chemical is released into the air, it reacts with the moisture in our eyes, forming sulfuric acid. This sulfuric acid then irritates the eyes and triggers a reflex that causes tears to be produced in order to wash away the irritant and protect the eyes.
To minimize the effect of onion fumes, you can try chilling the onion before cutting it, cutting it under running water, using a sharp knife to minimize the amount of cell damage, or wearing goggles or other eye protection.
