Ratan Naval Tata (born 28 December 1937) is an Indian industrialist, philanthropist, and a former chairman of Tata Sons.

He is honoured with two of the very best civilian awards of India, the Padma Vibhushan (2008) and Padma Bhushan (2000). 

He is well known for his business principles and philanthropy.
 

Born in 1937, he's a heir of the Tata family, and great-grandson of Jamsetji Tata, the known founding father of Tata Group. he's a former student of the Cornell University College of Architecture and Harvard graduate school .


He became a part of his company in 1961 when he wont to work on the workplace of Tata Steel, and was the clear successor to J. R. D. Tata upon the latter's retirement in 1991.

Under his dome, he got Tata Tea to accumulate the ownership of Tetley, Tata Motors to accumulate ownership of famous Jaguar Land Rover, and Tata Steel to accumulate Corus Company of France, in an effort to show Tata from a largely India-based group into a worldwide firm .

Ratan Tata was born in Bombay, now Mumbai, Maharashtra on 28 December 1937, and his father is Naval Tata (born in Surat, Gujarat).

Parents Naval and Sonoo divorced in 1948 when Ratan was 10 only, and he was raised by the widow of Sir Ratanji Tata, his grandmother, Navajbai Tata, who adopted him from the J. N. Petit Parsi Orphanage.

His mother tongue is Gujarati as he was in-tuned with Gujarati speaking people.

He studied at the Campion School, Mumbai, Maharashtra till the 8th grade, followed by Cathedral School and John Connon School, Mumbai and at Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh and, in 1955, he completed his graduation from Riverdale Country School in ny City, USA.

In 1959, he then got a degree in Architecture from Cornell University , and in 1975, attended the Advanced Management Program of Harvard graduate school .

During the 21 years when he led the Tata Group, revenues raised over 40 times, and profit, by over 50 times.

Ratan Tata resigned from his post and his executive powers within the Tata group on 28 December 2012, upon turning 75 years aged , appointing as his successor, Cyrus Mistry, the 44-year-old son of Pallonji Mistry of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, the most important individual shareholder of the group and related by marriage.

Tata invested his savings in Snapdeal – one among India's leading e-commerce websites –and, in January 2016, Teabox, a web premium Indian Tea seller, and CashKaro.com, a reduction coupons and cash-back website.

He has made small investments in both early and late stage companies in India, like INR 0.95 Cr in Ola Cabs. Its share prices rose from Rs 15,87,392 to Rs 29,44,805 in November 2015. In April 2015, it had been reported that Tata had acquired a stake in Chinese smartphone startup Xiaomi.

In October 2015, he partnered with American Express.

Other than Ola, he has also invested in successful business firms like Paytm, CarDekho, Curefit, Snapdeal, Abra, ClimaCell, FirstCry, Urban Ladder, Lenskart and lots of more.
