Reji's Suffering

• Reji Mathew, a healthy Class IX student, went to a private clinic in Kerala to have his tonsils removed.

• An ENT surgeon performed the operation under general anaesthesia.

• Due to improper anaesthesia, Reji suffered brain damage and became disabled for life.

• His father filed a complaint in the State Consumer Commission asking for Rs 5,00,000 compensation for medical negligence.

Right to Safety

• As consumers, we have the right to be safe from dangerous goods and services.

• Producers must follow safety rules strictly.

• For example, if a pressure cooker’s safety valve is defective, it can cause a serious accident.

• Manufacturers must ensure high quality, and government action is needed to maintain this.

• However, we still find bad quality products because supervision is weak, and the consumer movement is not strong.

• The seating should be comfortable and safe.
  • बैठने की व्यवस्था आरामदायक और सुरक्षित होनी चाहिए।

(c) Circus

• Safety nets should be used for high-flying acts.
  • ऊंचे करतबों के लिए सुरक्षा जाल का उपयोग होना चाहिए।
• Proper first aid and medical facilities must be available.
  • उचित प्राथमिक चिकित्सा और चिकित्सा सुविधाएं उपलब्ध होनी चाहिए।
• Animal treatment must be humane and safe for all.

(d) Medicines

• Medicines should be made according to strict health standards.

• Proper packaging with expiry dates and ingredients must be labeled.

(f) Marriage Pandal

• The pandal structure should be strong and stable to avoid collapse.
